Background
Founded in 1972 with a shoestring budget, a staff of three, and originally known as York Cumberland Housing, Avesta Housing has grown to become one of the country's most innovative and respected leaders in affordable housing. Avesta pioneered the first HUD Section 8 rental-assistance program in the nation. We were among the first U.S. property management organizations to offer resident services to low-income and elderly tenants. Today, Avesta Housing is the largest nonprofit developer of affordable quality housing in New England. Avesta has a portfolio of 1,300 housing units and administers housing vouchers for an additional 1,100 families. Avesta has assets of over $90,000,000 and a $25,000,000 annual budget.

Mission
Avesta Housing's mission is to promote and provide housing opportunities primarily for Southern Maine people in need. Avesta advocates for affordable housing, develops and manages high quality housing, and helps residents access other needed services.

Total Operating Expense (9/30/2007): $19,925,025
