Background Manna was started in 1982 as a faith-based organization by the Rev. Jim Dickerson as a means to help provide formerly homeless families with a solid foundation for their lives. Recognizing that safe and affordable housing was a critical part of that foundation, and recognizing that home ownership was a means to achieving roots in a community, Manna was created to provide permanent housing for graduates of a transitional housing program. As of the beginning of 2009, Manna had built or renovated nearly 1,000 affordable homes and become the leading developer of affordable home-ownership opportunties in Washington, D.C. Manna is a vertically integrated organization with all the disciplines in-house to accomplish all types of building and renovation projects in D.C., including architects, marketing specialists, accountants, construction managers, home-ownership trainers, community organizers, administrator, property manager and maintenance staff, carpenters, project managers, and fundraisers. In 2003 Manna created Manna Mortgage, the District's only non-profit mortgage company, which specializes in providing lower-income residents with low-cost, low-fee 30-year fixed rate mortgages.
Mission The mission of Manna is to empower individuals, strengthen families, and collaborate with stakeholders to rebuild neighborhoods and foster sustainable communities in Washington, D.C., by creating quality affordable housing for lower-income families, by offering support and training to families both before and after they purchase their homes, and by engaging in community and economic development activities.
