Background
UHI is a nonprofit affordable housing agency that serves the City of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. UHI targets its services to families that are under served by the traditional homeownership industry. UHI was founded in 1994 as an affiliate of the United Way of the Mid-South and initially funded through two Hope III awards from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to complete 40 units over a 3-year period. In 1999, UHI received a $3 million challenge grant from the Plough Foundation to build its capacity. In January 2000, UHI incorporated as an independent organization and soon after became part of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation’s (NRC) NeighborWorks® Network. Through NRC, UHI is linked to a national network of over 230 local nonprofit organizations working to revitalize America’s declining neighborhoods by supporting homeownership and preserving housing affordable to low-to-moderate-income families. Over the last 14 years, we have evolved significantly, from only building homes to financing and counseling. This has resulted in over 1400 homes purchased and the provision of homebuyer education to over 5,000 individuals and families. This represents a $119 million impact throughout West Tennessee.

Mission
United Housing, Inc. provides homeownership opportunities by creating affordable housing units, providing homebuyer and financial education and offering low-interest mortgage products to low to moderate income families in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee.
