Background
Members of the Greater Wilmington faith community founded Interfaith Housing in 1985. We developed our first projects in Wilmington and in New Castle County and then, in 1995, successfully expanded into Kent County. Our original support from denominations and individual churches and congregations has also expanded to include banks and other corporations, private foundations, and government agencies. We have grown steadily and have now rehabilitated, built and own or manage 206 housing units plus land in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. In 1998, we recorded near 100 percent occupancy through the year, housing a cumulative total of more than 760 people. Interfaith is now the largest statewide nonprofit community housing organization in Delaware. In 1995, Interfaith began its HomeBuyers Association for housing counseling.
