Background Originally known as Deadwood Community Housing Organization, the organization was incorporated in September of 1992. NHS of the Black Hills d.b.a. NeighborWorks Dakota Home Resources (DHR),provides programs such as Paint the Town,Plant the town, Tri-City Clean Up, and Treasures, Trash and Cash to improve the quality of life in communities it serves. NeighborWorks DHR also manages one multi-family housing complex, providing 27 apartments for low- to moderate-income families. NHS of the Black Hills' revolving loan fund offers low-interest loans for home improvements to area residents, and the orgaization administers revolving loan funds and grants for Deadwood's Historic Preservation Commission. Since becoming a Charterd NeighborWorks Organization, NeighborWorks DHR has expanded it's service area to include Box Elder, Central City, Edgemont, Lead and Wall. There are 16 Neighborhood Block Clubs in the NeighborWorks DHR family which work to improve their quality of life through neighborhood projects and socials. In the summer of 1998, NHS launched the NeighborWorks Campaign for Homeownership. The target area for the campaign includes 32 counties in Western South Dakota concentrating primarily on Lawrence County, Butte County, Meade County, Fall River County and Pennington County. NeighborWorks DHR partners with the South Dakota Housing Development Authority in the Governor's House Program. The Governor's House Program provides affordable single family, stick built homes to low-income families. The homes are built by the Springfield Correctional Facility and delivered to the homeowner's site. In 2003, NeighborWorks DHR developed the Developing Community Leaders Academy. The Academy provides leadership skills to residents. In 2006, NeighborWorks DHR also became a member of the Community Building and Oranizing Initiative. With grants from South Dakota Housing Development Authority and USDA Rural Development, and EQ2 loans from US Bank and Wells Fargo, NeighborWorks DHR is able to offer rehab assistance to residents in the communities they serve. NeighborWorks Dakota Home Resources offers Homebuyers Education, Money for Life, Post Purchase Maintenance, and Business Sense. NeighborWorks DHR in 2007 organized and formed Dakota Land Trust.
