Background
Amigos Del Valle, Inc. (ADV) is a private non-profit corporation chartered in 1974. It was organized as a cooperative effort between multiple County and City governments to provide nutrition, transportation, and housing services to the elderly of Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties in south Texas. Since then, ADV has become the largest non-profit developer and manager of affordable housing for senior citizens in the lower Rio Grande Valley. ADV owns and operates 9 complexes with 531 units and manages an additional 137 units for other owners. In addition to its residential services, ADV provides congregate and home-delivered meals and transportation services for the elderly. ADV has added a single-family home ownership program. This program is assisting low and moderate-income families in the Lower Rio Grande Valley to obtain safe, decent, and affordable homes that would not be available to them under conventional terms. ADV is a member of the Campaign for Homeownership. ADV is led by a 19 member Board of Directors composed of 12 city and 3 county government officials and 4 members at large from the three-county service area. In addition, ADV has a participant Project Advisory Council whose membership consists of the presidents of ADV's 33 Senior Center Advisory Councils. The Project Advisory Council meets on a monthly basis to address issues and concerns and to develop recommendations to the administrative staff and Board of Directors. ADV has been designated a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) and is a member of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation's national NeighborWorks network.
