Background Organized by farmworkers, a minister and a county commissioner to create housing for people who had little hope of achieving the American dream of owning their own home, Tierra del Sol has become one of the largest nonprofit, rural housing development corporations (by numbers of units produced) in the Country. Tierra del Sol was incorporated in New Mexico on April 2, 1973, and was later incorporated in Arizona and Texas. Tierra del Sol’s primary areas of work have been Las Cruces and the South Valley (rural New Mexico and extreme western Texas), El Paso and Colonias of the Rio Grande. Tierra del Sol assists populations that are characterized by, but not limited to, the following groups: farmworkers, elderly citizens, developmentally disabled citizens, disenfranchised groups, disadvantaged groups, and moderate income families. Mission
